About the TOEFL

Test of English as a Foreign Language

The TOEFL is the essential exam for entry to universities in the U.S.A.  The TOEFL measures the ability of non-native English speakers to use and understand North American English as it is spoken, written and heard in colleges and universities where instruction is in English.

Who is the TOEFL for?

The TOEFL is for people who need to demonstrate their level of English proficiency which is required by many univerisities in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand as well as government agencies, scholarship programs and licensing/certification agencies who use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.

There is no single passing score for all institutions, rather, each institution or program sets its own standards. Generally, Graduate Programs require a higher score, than Undergraduate Programs. For example, Los Andes University grad score of 81/120. Harvard University 105/120. Toronto University 100/120.
